Beauty on the Bay

San Diego Bay is a boater's dream, offering exceptional beauty and services for all who enter its peaceful water. The bay is protected by a long peninsula, Point Loma, which hooks around the entrance to the bay, protecting it from the wild ocean outside. San Diego's location on the Southern California coast makes it unique. It is the last port in United States forships sailing south, and the firstport for ships sailing north.
Home to the America's Cup Harbor, San Diego Bay offers boaters a vast array of services and activities. There are numerous slips, marinas, moorings, boating repair facilities and marine supply outlets.
San Diego Bay is literally ringed with a huge array of parks, restaurants, businesses, and numerous shopping opportunities to accommodate all types of boaters, from the small recreational boater, to the tourist who arrives on a cruise ship. Since the Bay is an important port for U.S.Navy, viewing enormous ships entering and leaving the harbor is a common, yet mesmerizing sight.
Those who love the lore and history of maritime traditions will not want to miss visiting the San Diego Maritime Museum. The museum is housed aboard the illustrious tallship, Star of India, once an important player in Alaskan salmon fishery, and the Ferryboat Berkeley, which carried passengers escaping the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. It is located on east end of the bay and provides visitors with a vivid view of San Diego's nautical history.
Another important piece of San Diego history can be glimpsed at the historic lighthouse on Point Loma. Built in 1855, it was the first lighthouse to be built on California's coast. Other points of historic interest along San Diego Bay include the community of Coronado, home of the world-famous Hotel del Coronado,San Diego's Gaslamp Quarterin the downtown area, and the authentically restored Old Town State Park.
